Just ran across an interesting old article in google news archive I thought all would be interested in (btw, I am not trying to start up the accent debate again!):

Shaz, Shaz, Shaz! Here we go again! Who does the article quote? The reason for the accent for this movie was well covered in my posting about Ned's accent. Ian Jones sums it up himself at the bottom of the third paragraph and I quote, "....Ned remained, I think, an Irishman at heart". End of quote.

He "thinks"! Not definitely, points to, or documented, but “thinks”! As the article points out, Ian Jones copped a lot of flack over the accent issue and this only backs up what I wrote about it. The article is just an exercise in trying to justify selling out Aussie history to suit British filmmakers and actors.

Fitzy Fitzy Fitzy,
as I had said Ian thunk he was Irish - note his words " He thought with a brogue as well" ( begorrah ). This was 40 years ago and Mr Jones thought something was happening but he knew not what it was to misquote Mr Dylan!
And a big thankyou to Sharon for alerting us, but not alarming us with this article which at least tells me my memory is not totally lost to altzheimer's!! Fitzy, maaaate, you should take this article up with Mr Jones who always blames Alex Buzo, who died in 2006, for the irish accent et al!! I don't think we shall ever know if Ned talked like John Williamson or other professional strine speakers, hey, true blue?

Please don't take it the wrong way Sharon, as no offence was meant. My response was also to those who may have read this and thought it was gospel. I was merely pointing out that when it comes to this topic, the one who created this myth was Ian Jones, so he is not a good source to quote, especially as he admits it is only his belief. Each time this sort of thing gets shown, a certain amount of people will believe it.

As in a previous post, I would have been interested in how Americans would feel if some of their legends had been portrayed with the accent of their parents. I suspect it would go over like a concrete kite.

I’m sorry if I offended you.

Fitzy.

Ahoy there Capt Jack! Could you enlighten a landlubber like myself as to a bit more on this bloke Alez Buzo, as it’s new one on me. Also, I would like nothing more that to debate this topic with Ian Jones, though I know it will never happen, as there are reputations and credibility at stake. Beside’s I’m a nobody, so why risk everything when you already have the world on your side. But I’m afraid, I have a bit of that pioneering spirit and healthy disrespect for authority, so will not give up the fight, no matter what the odds. That kinda sounds familiar!!!!!!

ahoy there Fitzy! I heard Ian recorded at a Ned meeting saying "don't blame me for Mick's ned, it was Alex Buzo" - a very famous playright in the 50's and 60's, now much neglected. read more authorative words at this link:
http://www.alexbuzo.com.au/alex/alex.html
We must also rememeber that Ian Jones was a TV writer and had not written a book on Ned at that time. And a lot of research has been done in the last 40 years! There was very little knowledge of Ned in those days - I was out looking for it in Victoria at the time and the Kelly saga was well known but totally unknown if'n ya know what I mean.
And Fitzy " You're nobody till somebody loves you" and I am sure you are loved by somebody!! Keep fighting the good fight!

Thanks Capt Jack. I do recall hearing of him now. Isn’t that typical, our history being rewritten by a playwright! No matter how gifted or talented they are, they tend to replace fact, with poetic licence. If Jones blames Buzo, then why has he perpetuated this myth, instead of rectifying it! No-one has had the opportunities to do so as Ian Jones has had.

Fitzy.

P.S.
My Mum loves me, does that count?
