All,
The most amazing thing had just happened to me in the last few days. I had been busy at work at the SLV for a lady who had requested me to assist her with collecting Ned related Newspaper articles......what was even stranger she was happy to pay.
I coulnt accept payment but I did have lunch and train fare paid for. I basically started with articles I yet did not have and will cont, on at a later date. I explained to her that she could easily do the job herself........ but wanted someone that knew exactly where to go and look........I have all my articles numbered from which draw and roll each of the microfilms are housed. (for my future reference) I also showed her a few other bits and pieces.
WHY all this....... a new book will hit our shelfs within the next few yrs.
Anyway, all went well & thought I’ll share this amazing request.

Being a research assistant is fun, isn't it? That is great that you are helping a future author! You sure do like to tease us, Joe! Now I am going to be very curious as to who, what, when, where, how and why! :)
At least all the Argus papers will be online soon, but there are so many others like The Age and The Herald (and other smaller ones) that still must be retrieved from the library. Wish they would all go online to make research so much easier, especially from the distance!

Hi Shaz
Ohhh I never thought of it that way......a research assistant, I like that ;-)
no,no,no I'm not teasing, perhaps I should have given more details. Her name is Diane from country vic. It looks as though she has an interest with McIntyre & fitzpatrick. Dont know the release date of book, however it wont be anytime soon. Diane got my details off a contact I made recently. I didnt ask her too many questions about her book as I didnt want to pee her off, she said what she had to say & I left it at that.

That is exactly what you are doing...being a research assistant! :) It is about time a new serious Kelly book was in the works.
Have you invited the lady to come visit the forum?

G'day bloke,
Diane Gardiner is old friend who gave me my start at the Melbourne Gaol when I was 14. My research has slowed down quite a bit for we're getting ready for the arrival of our baby girl. My research has been more aimed at finding a name for her :) any ideas?

ey Joe,
when i was in high school i needed a place to work for work experience and Diane Gardiner accepted me at the Old Melbourne Gaol when I was 14. I continued working there as a volunteer on weekends and school holidays until I was old enough to move on to a full time job somewhere else. Diane one day sat me down on a chair in front of the armour that was there and placed Ned's death mask in my hands. What an overwhelming feeling it was! I also worked with some other great people there like Old John who is no longer with us, Ian who I saw still working there not long ago and Old Bob whom I walked with to the train station many days and on the day of his retirement. Bob was a great bloke and I still remember him leaving his lunch on some steps that he knew a homeless man slept. They were the days...........
